Prix Jean Prat 2025 Preview – Runners Guide as 3yo Colts & Fillies Run in First Deauville Group 1 of Summer

Anglo-Irish representation in the 1,400m Group 1 Prix Jean Prat of 2025 at Deauville on Sunday, 6 July largely surrounds talented three-year-olds trying to get their careers back on track. Coolmore, Godolphin and Juddmonte all have raiders on the Normandy Coast.

The Lion In Winter was the long-time ante post favourite for The Derby at Epsom, but hasn’t fired in a couple of runs for Aidan O’Brien this term so far. Cosmic Year skipped the Royal meeting after coming second in the Irish 2000 Guineas with Harry Charlton saving him for a tilt at this.

A strong home team in the Prix Jean Prat 2025 includes runners from top French stables in the field of nine. Christopher Head unleashes course and distance Group 3 winner Maranoa Charlie. Francis-Henri Graffard had a frustrating Royal Ascot, but can continue to put that behind him if the speedy Woodshauna runs well here.

Andre Fabre saddles the filly Apollo Fountain, although she in truth looks little more than a pacemaker for Cosmic Year. The Wertheimer Brothers also have a couple of entries in Cacofonix (Yann Barberot), who could have similar duties for Silius (Christophe Ferland).

Prix Jean Prat 2025 Runners Guide

1. Maranoa Charlie

Three-time Group 3 winner including over course and distance on reappearance when beating Silius. Confirmed that form at Longchamp latest, but lacked the gears to land much of a blow on Woodshauna around Chantilly over shorter in-between. Sure to appreciate the step back up in trip.

2. Shadow Of Light

Dual Group 1 winner on soft ground in the autumn including over this trip. Only beaten a length when conceding race fitness to the front two in the 2000 Guineas on reappearance. Perhaps didn’t handle the fast going when dropped back for the Commonwealth Cup latest. The Prix Jean Prat of 2025 looks more suitable.

3. Cosmic Year

Cosy Listed winner at Newmarket on 2000 Guineas card. No match for owner companion Field Of Gold in Irish Classic latest, but the winner has since gone in again at Royal Ascot. Drops back in trip and unbeaten over this distance. Shortlisted.

4. The Lion In Winter

Reverts to the trip he won so impressively over during the Ebor Festival last summer. Made favourite for this year’s Epsom Derby following that York Group 3 success. Didn’t fire in the Dante there on reappearance, then weakened out of the Premier Classic tamely. Bidding to get career back on track in Prix Jean Prat of 2025, but in the right hands.

5. Woodshauna

Behind Maranoa Charlie and Silius in the Prix Djebel over course and distance here on penultimate start. Since showed speed to land a 1,200m Group 3 at Chantilly latest when turning the tables on the former. Runner-up the last day has come out and won the Commonwealth Cup. Looks best of the home team on paper.

6. Cacofonix

Maiden winner at Compiegne over this trip last season. Successful again around Longchamp in another minor race latest. Major step up in grade and looks like a pacemaker for the same owners’ Silius in the Prix Jean Prat of 2025.

7. Silius

Won minor races and Listed contest at Cagnes-sur-Mer in February. No match for Maranoa Charlie when runner-up in two subsequent starts. Has the pedigree to be better over further. Connections going down a strange route here, but he’s their better horse on form.

8. Daylight

Earthlight’s first Group winner as a sire! Daylight lands the Group 3 Prix de Cabourg at Deauville for @mickaelbarzalon…

Filly who won Group 3 over 1,200m here last summer and then third in the Prix Morny. Also runner-up in the Middle Park Stakes to subsequent Breeders’ Cup and Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Lake Victoria. Definite stamina doubts for the Prix Jean Prat 2025 based on how she’s shaped on both run this season, however.

9. Apollo Fountain

No match for old rival Daylight in the Prix du Cabourg here last summer. Beaten on all four subsequent starts this season. Very hard to see her playing any significant part here, other than as a pacemaker for owner companion Cosmic Year. Discounted.

Prix Jean Prat 2025 Shortlist & Verdict

With The Lion In Winter proving such an enigma, forecast softer ground over the 1,400m distance looks more like it for SHADOW OF LIGHT. He should still get a mile in time, but the straight course makes this a proper test. Cosmic Year doesn’t necessarily want to go down in trip, meanwhile, but does have a good record over it.

For the home team, Woodshauna and Maranoa Charlie lock horns again but from opposite ends of the draw. It might be the former who is just open to more progress over this distance, however. The others have plenty to find with the overseas runners or their domestic rivals on all known fom.
